San Jose, California, United States San Jose State University Full time

Department Overview

The Mechanical Engineering department is comprised of approximately 900 undergraduate and graduate scholars, alongside committed faculty and experienced part-time instructors from the Silicon Valley industry, who integrate contemporary practices into the curriculum. Our program encompasses three primary areas: design, mechatronics, and thermal-fluid sciences. The design and thermal-fluid sciences serve as foundational elements of all accredited mechanical engineering programs nationwide, while mechatronics stands out as a specialized focus at our institution, providing students with an engaging and marketable field of study. Our practical curriculum includes numerous laboratory experiences that translate theoretical knowledge into real-world applications. Our award-winning design initiatives showcase the exceptional capabilities of our students and faculty in crafting innovative solutions that create a meaningful impact. Furthermore, we actively involve both undergraduate and graduate students in faculty-led research endeavors, pushing the boundaries of mechanical engineering.

Role Responsibilities

Lecturers are anticipated to deliver their courses with effectiveness; maintain suitable office hours in alignment with university policy; and collaborate with the department in the peer-review process. Full-time faculty will support lecturers in course development, including content creation and textbook selection. Lecturers are encouraged to seek advice from the Department Chair for clarification on university policies and departmental practices regarding grading, assessments, textbooks, office hours, curriculum objectives, disability accommodations, academic integrity, and more.

All faculty members are expected to organize their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official platform provided for the university community. Training on this system will be made available.

Every course, whether conducted online or in-person, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure a consistent faculty-student connection. Students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their courses. Access to this system will be granted prior to the commencement of the semester. All classes must be conducted as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the assigned mode (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Applicants must exhibit an understanding of and address the needs of a diverse student population, including variations in age, abilities, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, primary languages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and academic preparations, through inclusive course materials, teaching methodologies, and advisement.

Essential Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, or an equivalent such as a bachelor's degree in the discipline combined with at least five years of significant and relevant professional experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter pertinent to the assigned discipline.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory performance in prior academic endeavors.
  • Applicants should illustrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational aspirations of a multicultural student body, which may have been acquired through cross-cultural studies, training, teaching, or similar experiences.

Compensation Details

Compensation and salary range placement are determined based on qualifications and experience. To learn more about range placement, please refer to the university's policy documentation.

Anticipated starting salary ranges are as follows:

L-A / Range 2 - $5007 - $5675
L-B / Range 3 - $5925 - $7125
L-C / Range 4 - $6500 - $8982
L-D / Range 5 - $8184 - $9854

These ranges represent the anticipated monthly salary for full-time academic year faculty; part-time rates will be prorated accordingly. There are six monthly payments per semester (full-time academic year annual salary = rate x 12). Please consult the Faculty Salary Schedule for additional information.

Application Process

To apply, complete the online employment application and attach the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Cover Letter
  • List of at least three (3) to five (5) references
  • Statement of Teaching Philosophy
  • Statement of Expertise, detailing professional experience and courses you are qualified to teach

This position remains open for applications.

Employment Conditions

Faculty members are required to complete assigned CSU employee training based on their role (e.g., training on preventing discrimination and harassment, gender equity, and Title IX, health and safety). In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the faculty member in this role will undergo ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Individuals designated as Campus Security Authorities must promptly report Clery incidents to the institution and complete required Clery Act training as determined by the university's Clery Director.

Offers of employment are conditional and may be rescinded if background checks reveal disqualifying information or if it is found that the candidate has withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may impact the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Appointment is subject to budget and enrollment considerations and follows the order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between the California State University and the California Faculty Association.
