Senior Vocational Nurse Specialist - Primary Care

Job Summary:

Under the guidance of the Administrative Nurse Manager, the Senior Vocational Nurse Specialist employs the nursing process to evaluate and recognize the unique needs of patients through careful observation of symptoms, emotional well-being, laboratory findings, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, and responses to treatment. This role requires the application of Patient-Centered Medical Home Standards and the Ten Building Blocks of Primary Care. The Senior LVN is tasked with delivering nursing care within an outpatient environment, collaborating closely with RNs and physicians to provide comprehensive nursing care tailored to the physiological and psychosocial needs of patients.

The Senior LVN will also engage in chart abstraction and maintain a professional demeanor while adhering to the Medical Center's standards. Responsibilities include administering medications and vaccines, reviewing and monitoring lab results, performing treatments and procedures relevant to both pediatric and adult primary care, such as ear irrigations, wound care, and urethral catheterization, as well as providing patient education. Flexibility to cover various clinic sites is essential.


This position requires excellent customer service and communication skills, utilized daily through various forms of contact, including phone, electronic communication, and in-person interactions with both internal and external stakeholders. Proficiency in computer systems, including ApeX and other UCSF software, is necessary. The Senior LVN must uphold the standards of policies and procedures, maintain current knowledge of pharmacology, and demonstrate competency in administration methods while complying with all relevant policies regarding infection control, safety, and clinical practice.

Salary Information:

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range is influenced by factors such as work experience and internal equity within this classification. The salary range for this position is $57.83 per hour.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in an outpatient setting.
  • Essential knowledge and abilities for successful performance in this role, including excellent communication skills, problem-solving capabilities, and comfort with new technologies.
  • Basic computer and typing skills.
  • Prior experience with electronic health records.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Trained and licensed to perform phlebotomy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Spanish, Chinese, or Russian is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with the principles of a Patient-Centered Medical Home environment.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Active Licensed Vocational Nurse licensure in California.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
