The mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to safeguard and enhance the health of all individuals in San Francisco. Role Overview:

Under the guidance of physicians or registered nurses, the Vocational Nursing Specialist is responsible for preparing, administering, and documenting prescribed medications and injections. This role involves obtaining patient histories, monitoring and recording physiological and psychosocial indicators, taking vital signs, and maintaining medical records, all while ensuring a safe and sanitary environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver nursing care to patients as directed by physicians and registered nurses, participating in the development and maintenance of nursing care plans.
  • Assist in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ensuring accurate administration and documentation of medications and injections.
  • Provide direct patient care to ensure comfort and cleanliness, which may include assisting with feeding and elimination functions.
  • Conduct patient screenings by obtaining histories and observing physiological and psychological signs, as well as performing necessary nursing diagnostic tests.
  • Maintain precise records of medication administration and treatment progress, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and clean environment while managing supplies and equipment in the assigned area.
  • Educate and counsel patients regarding their physical self-care and emotional needs.
  • Understand the dynamics of human relationships among patients, families, and healthcare personnel.
  • Recognize the impact of social, economic, and cultural factors on patients and their families.
  • Perform specialized procedures in designated areas after receiving appropriate training.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned.

Licensure Requirement:

Possession of a valid California Vocational Nurse License issued by the California State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners is mandatory.

Applicants must clearly demonstrate how they meet the minimum qualifications in their application. Verification of qualifying education and experience may be required during the recruitment process.

Selection Process:

Qualified candidates must complete all steps in the selection process, including a Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) and a Training and Experience Evaluation.
