Job Summary

The City of Palo Alto is seeking a highly skilled Building Inspector/Specialist/Senior to join our Planning and Community Environment team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring that construction projects meet building codes and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Makes periodic field inspections of work in progress to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Approves acceptable work or indicates revisions necessary for code compliance.
  • Conducts final inspections of completed buildings or structures.
  • Makes specified inspections of commercial and industrial occupancies to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Explains code requirements to City personnel, builders, architects, contractors, and the public.
  • Maintains records of inspections, violation notices, investigations, and other related data.
Requirements
  • Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Five years of building inspection experience.
  • Possession of a driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of, or within one year of employment, International Code Counsel (ICC) Residential Building Inspector or Commercial Building Inspector certificate.
  • One specialty certification in addition to the ICC certification.
Working Conditions

The ideal candidate will be able to work in an office and construction site environment, with exposure to dust, noise, odors, uneven walking surfaces, and inclement weather. Activities include climbing, stooping, light lifting, crawling, and inspecting in confined areas, in proximity to construction equipment.
