About the Opportunity

The City of Palo Alto is seeking a highly skilled Fire Inspector to join our team in the Fire Prevention Bureau. As a Fire Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring public safety by conducting routine and special inspections of commercial buildings, public assemblies, and residential properties to ensure compliance with fire and life safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of industrial plants, commercial establishments, and places of public assembly to determine compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Check plans for new building construction and confer with other city departments to determine compliance with fire and life safety requirements.
  • Investigate complaints received by the department and determine whether a fire hazard exists, and issue notices to abate.
  • Participate in public education programs and advise the public on general and specific fire and life safety matters.
  • Make and maintain records and reports related to all activities.
  • Participate in Fire Department training programs relating to areas of expertise.
Requirements
  • Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • College-level fire science courses in fire prevention and hazardous materials.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain International Code Council (ICC) Inspector I Certification or completion of State Fire Inspector 1 series or equivalent within 1 year of hire.
  • Possession of a valid American Heart Association CPR card.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree in Fire Science.
  • Certification by State Board of Fire Services as Fire Investigator I or Hazardous Materials Technician/Responder.
