About the Opportunity

The City of Palo Alto's Fire Prevention Bureau is seeking highly skilled and motivated individuals to fill four Fire Inspector positions. These positions will be responsible for conducting routine and special inspections of commercial buildings, public assemblies, retail, high-rise, and certain residential buildings to ensure compliance with fire and life safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of industrial plants, commercial establishments, and places of public assembly to determine compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Check plans for new building construction and confer with other concerned city departments to determine compliance with fire and life safety requirements.
  • Investigate complaints received by the department and determine whether a fire hazard exists, and issue notices to abate and follow through with the City Attorney's office when necessary to secure abatement.
  • Participate in public education programs, advise the public on general and specific fire and life safety matters, and assist in the formation of evacuation and emergency action plans for large public and private buildings.
  • Make and maintain records and reports related to all activities.
  • Participate in Fire Department training programs relating to areas of expertise.
  • May issue citations to gain compliance.
  • Conduct investigations related to apprehending and prosecution of suspected arsonists and evaluate fire scenes to determine origin and cause of fires.
Requirements
  • Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • College-level fire science courses in fire prevention and hazardous materials.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain International Code Council (ICC) Inspector I Certification or completion of State Fire Inspector 1 series or equivalent within 1 year of hire.
  • Possession of a valid California Emergency Medical Technician License.
  • Possession of a valid American Heart Association CPR card.
  • Two years' experience as a firefighter.
