Baltimore, Maryland, United States HE HORTON'S KIDS Full time

About Hortons Kids:

Hortons Kids is a community-focused organization dedicated to fostering positive change in the lives of 600 children and their families in grades K-12 residing in two of the most underserved neighborhoods in southeast Washington, DC: Wellington Park and Stanton Oaks.

These neighborhoods are home to children and families with ambitious aspirations and the potential to realize them. However, years of disinvestment and systemic inequality have created significant barriers to access for these families.

Hortons Kids is committed to dismantling these barriers and leveling the playing field by offering comprehensive academic, social-emotional, health and wellness, and family and community engagement support.

As an organization that serves individuals from low-income communities, we acknowledge that systemic oppression disproportionately affects the most marginalized groups in society, including BIPOC individuals, those with disabilities, people from low-wealth backgrounds, women, and LGBTQ individuals.

We intentionally prioritize these communities in our initiatives and encourage individuals from these and other marginalized backgrounds to consider this position.

Position Overview:

Hortons Kids is in search of K-8 Summer Program Assistants to engage in our in-person Summer Camp, which serves approximately 120 children, with class sizes limited to 12 children.

Each class will be led by a Summer Teacher and supported by a Summer Program Assistant.

The Hortons Kids Summer Camp aims to combat summer learning loss while providing a secure and enjoyable environment for children during the summer months.

Our approach includes academic interventions, social-emotional learning opportunities, enrichment activities, and incentive-based field trips.

For participants, the Hortons Kids Summer Camp is a 5-week program operating Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

The commitment for Summer Program Assistants is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. Final program details will be communicated prior to hiring. Summer Program Assistants are guaranteed 25 workdays, including essential training sessions.

Compensation:
This role offers an hourly wage of $20 to $22.

Responsibilities include planning and implementing small group instructional interventions with the guidance of the Classroom Teacher, as well as making necessary accommodations and modifications to cater to diverse student needs.

You will consistently monitor students' progress, participation, and attendance, and supervise your assigned classroom in the absence of a teacher.

Youth Development Responsibilities:
Assist in delivering daily social-emotional learning lessons based on the Second Step curriculum. Contribute to the development and integration of mindfulness activities, movement breaks, and brain breaks into the educational experience. Implement and monitor the Hortons Kids incentive program.

Act as a chaperone during incentive field trips.

Administrative Duties:
Support the utilization of data tools provided to track children's academic and social-emotional growth.

Qualifications:

A High School Diploma is required (Bachelor's Degree preferred). A minimum of 1 year of experience working directly with children in elementary and/or middle school settings, whether in a classroom or after-school program, is necessary.

Experience with children from backgrounds similar to those of Hortons Kids participants is preferred. Strong skills in behavior management and relationship building are essential.

Ability to facilitate both whole group and small group lessons, encompassing academic and youth development topics. Comfort in working collaboratively within a team, adapting swiftly to changes, and accepting constructive feedback.

A demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice for children and families is crucial.

Any offers made to candidates will be contingent upon completing standard screening requirements, including an FBI background check and a Child Protection Register check.

Applicants must be 18 years or older to apply. Hortons Kids, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
