Position Overview

The Learning Specialist will play a crucial role in enhancing the academic journey of medical and physician assistant students. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, this position focuses on delivering tailored support to individuals and groups through workshops centered on adult learning principles, academic improvement, time management, and knowledge organization. A key responsibility includes assisting students in their preparation for licensure and nationally standardized examinations.

While expertise in science or medicine is not mandatory, a solid foundation in learning sciences and academic support within higher education is essential. The successful candidate will engage with students, develop and facilitate workshops, and collaborate with various departments to foster academic success. This includes maintaining student records in accordance with privacy regulations and ensuring accurate documentation of all interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement programs aimed at enhancing student retention and academic achievement.
  • Facilitate exam preparation initiatives for licensure and standardized tests.
  • Establish a comprehensive framework for identifying and assisting academically at-risk students.
  • Conduct assessments of individual learning needs and create personalized academic plans.
  • Lead workshops on effective learning strategies, clinical reasoning, and test preparation.
  • Oversee a peer tutoring program, including tutor training and program evaluation.
  • Review educational materials to provide effective support to students.
  • Ensure students are informed about available learning resources.
  • Collaborate with various departments to monitor and support student academic progress.
  • Provide referrals to relevant internal and external support services.
  • Maintain compliance with privacy regulations and accurate documentation.
  • Analyze data related to service utilization and intervention outcomes.
  • Engage in professional development through participation in relevant organizations and conferences.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Education, Educational Psychology, or a related field.
  • Doctorate degree (PhD or EdD) in Education or Educational Psychology is preferred.

Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience in academic support within higher education.
  • Knowledge of learning theories and effective teaching methodologies.
  • Experience in utilizing outcome measures for quality improvement.
  • Proven ability to work in structured educational environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in academic support within medical or health professions education.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies in education.
  • Understanding of standardized examinations relevant to medical education.
