Position Overview

The Multilingual Learning Specialist (MLL) provides support to English Language Learners and students who require at-risk interventions. This role involves working collaboratively with general education teachers, designing and implementing direct MLL instruction, and communicating with parents and guardians.

Core Competencies & Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development: Demonstrates knowledge of grade-level content curricula to engage students in all content areas and differentiate curriculum and instruction to support multilingual learners.
  • Instructional Strategies: Co-plans, prepares, and facilitates daily standards-based lessons that utilize a variety of MLL instructional strategies, differentiating teaching based on the diverse and individual needs of all students.
  • Collaboration and Co-Teaching: Co-teaches with general education teachers and supports student learning through modeling, lesson planning, team teaching, data analysis, and ongoing feedback through dialogue and reflections.
  • Regulatory and Instructional Requirements: Manages both regulatory and instructional requirements as an MLL teacher, including administering Home Language Questionnaires and NYSITELL to determine student eligibility for MLL service.
  • Assessment and Data Analysis: Uses assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices, creating a classroom culture of data-driven decision-making to close the achievement gap for all students.
  • Classroom Environment: Creates a classroom environment of respect and rapport to ensure a safe, caring, and orderly school environment that nurtures the unique needs of each student.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Participates in collaborative curriculum and professional development, professional learning communities, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions, seeking to know students' strengths and challenge areas actively and communicating effectively with parents.
  • Student Progress and Support: Evaluates, determines goals for, and tracks progress of individual multilingual learners, and communicates with staff, students, and families.
  • Record Keeping and Advising: Maintains MLL records and advises teachers on modifying/accommodating curriculum for multilingual learners, sharing best practices to ensure high-quality instruction.
  • Classroom Management and Relationships: Builds a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom, and creates and maintains strong relationships with students and families.
  • Professional Development and Meetings: Actively participates in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer institute, and accepts ultimate responsibility for the academic progress of his or her students.
  • IEP Support and Compliance: Reviews and complies with guidelines of students' IEPs, attends IEP meetings, follows IDEA reporting requirements, and provides information about student performance and services received.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Participates in meetings, designated school functions outside of school hours, and opportunities for individual and school-wide professional development, and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • New York State teaching certification in Students with Disabilities, Special Ed, or ESL preferred.
  • Teaching or student teaching experience in a school required.
  • Experience with and interest in working with high-needs students preferred.
