Position Overview

The Learning Specialist will report directly to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and will be responsible for delivering personalized support to medical and physician assistant students. This role will also involve organizing group workshops focused on adult learning principles, academic enhancement, time management, and knowledge organization. A key responsibility will be to assist students in preparing for licensure and nationally standardized exams.

While expertise in science or medicine is not required, a solid foundation in learning sciences and academic support within higher education is essential. The successful candidate will engage with students, develop and facilitate workshops, and collaborate with various departments to promote academic success. This includes maintaining student records in accordance with FERPA regulations and ensuring accurate documentation of all interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement programs aimed at enhancing student retention and academic achievement throughout the medical and physician assistant curricula.
  • Facilitate exam preparation programs for USMLE and NBME for MD students and PANCE for PA students.
  • Establish a comprehensive framework for identifying and supporting students who are academically at risk.
  • Conduct individual assessments to identify learning needs and create tailored academic plans for student success.
  • Lead workshops and group sessions focused on effective learning strategies, clinical reasoning, time management, and test preparation.
  • Oversee a peer tutoring program, including tutor training and program development, while tracking and reporting on outcomes.
  • Evaluate existing peer mentorship initiatives and collaborate with students to enhance training and support.
  • Review educational materials and resources to provide effective assistance to students.
  • Ensure students are informed about available learning tools and resources.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to provide holistic support to medical students and monitor their academic progress.
  • Refer students to internal and external services as needed, including disability access, mental health, and career advising.
  • Maintain compliance with FERPA in managing student records and documentation.
  • Analyze data related to service utilization and intervention outcomes, providing regular reports to relevant stakeholders.
  • Engage in professional development through participation in relevant organizations and conferences.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Education, Educational Psychology, or a related field.
  • Doctorate degree (PhD or EdD) in Education or Educational Psychology is preferred.

Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience in academic support within higher education, including program development.
  • Knowledge of learning theories, teaching methodologies, and project management.
  • Experience in utilizing outcome measures for continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in structured environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in academic support within a medical school or health professions program.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and their application in education.
  • Knowledge of standardized examinations relevant to medical students.
