Position Overview

The Learning Specialist will report directly to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and will play a crucial role in offering tailored support to medical and physician assistant students. This position involves creating and delivering group workshops focused on adult learning principles, academic improvement, time management, and knowledge organization. A significant focus will be on assisting students in their preparation for licensure and nationally standardized exams.

The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in learning sciences and academic support within higher education, alongside a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges associated with clinical education. Responsibilities will include one-on-one student meetings, workshop preparation, and collaboration with various departments to enhance student academic performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement programs aimed at fostering student retention and academic achievement throughout medical and physician assistant curricula.
  • Facilitate preparation programs for USMLE and NBME exams for MD students and PANCE for PA students.
  • Establish a comprehensive framework for identifying and supporting students who are academically at risk.
  • Conduct individual assessments to determine learning needs and develop personalized academic plans.
  • Lead workshops on effective learning strategies, clinical reasoning enhancement, time management, test preparation, and self-assessment.
  • Oversee and enhance a peer tutoring program, including tutor training and program evaluation.
  • Review educational materials to ensure they meet student needs and provide effective assistance.
  • Ensure students are informed about available learning resources from Weill Cornell and Cornell University.
  • Collaborate with various departments to provide holistic support to medical students and monitor their academic progress.
  • Refer students to appropriate internal and external services as needed.
  • Maintain student records in compliance with FERPA regulations and document all interactions accurately.
  • Analyze service usage and intervention outcomes, providing regular reports to relevant stakeholders.
  • Engage in professional development activities to stay updated on best practices in student support and learning sciences.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Education, Educational Psychology, or a related field.
  • Doctorate (PhD or EdD) in Education or Educational Psychology is preferred.

Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience in academic support within higher education, including program development.
  • Knowledge of learning theories, teaching methods, and project management.
  • Experience in utilizing outcome measures for continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in structured environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in academic support within a medical school or similar rigorous educational setting.
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies as they apply to education.
  • Knowledge of standardized exams relevant to medical students (e.g., MCAT, USMLE).
