Role Summary
The Financial Counselor plays a crucial role in managing patient financial interactions, including the verification of benefits and eligibility during admission inquiries. Responsibilities include preparing admission documentation, collecting necessary payments from patients, and facilitating the establishment of effective payment plans. This position also involves collaboration with utilization review and discharge planning teams to mitigate the risk of non-payment, providing ongoing benefit information to patients, and participating in discharge procedures to ensure financial arrangements are in place.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify eligibility and benefits for all admissions upon receipt of inquiry forms.
- Communicate benefits information and co-payment requirements to patients and their families prior to admission.
- Obtain necessary admission files from relevant departments each morning.
- Maintain an organized filing system for authorizations and benefit expirations, ensuring daily communication with the Business Office Director.
- Meet with patients being discharged to finalize their financial obligations.
- Engage with patients regarding financial responsibilities for specific programs prior to participation.
- Monitor and follow up on payment plans established by patients through calls or correspondence.
- Complete admission documentation within one business day and schedule follow-up dates as necessary.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience: At least one year of experience in admissions and collections processes, with a solid understanding of managed care, insurance coverage, co-payments, and payment plans. Proficiency in computer applications and business software (Excel) is preferred.
Additional Requirements: Flexibility to work occasional overtime and varied hours may be necessary.
