Role Summary

The Financial Counselor plays a crucial role in the financial operations of our healthcare facility. This position is tasked with verifying patient benefits and eligibility during admission inquiries, preparing necessary documentation, collecting patient payments, and assisting in the establishment of effective payment plans. Additionally, the counselor coordinates with utilization review and discharge planning to mitigate the risk of non-payment, provides ongoing benefit information to patients, and participates in discharge procedures while managing financial arrangements with collection staff.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Verify eligibility and benefits for all admissions upon receipt of inquiry forms.
  2. Communicate benefit details and co-payment requirements to patients and their families prior to admission.
  3. Retrieve after-hours admission files from the appropriate department each morning, ensuring timely processing.
  4. Maintain an organized filing system for authorizations and benefit expirations, communicating regularly with the Business Office Director.
  5. Meet with all patients being discharged to finalize their financial obligations.
  6. Engage with youth and adult patients regarding financial responsibilities for programs prior to participation.
  7. Monitor and follow up on payment plans established by patients through calls or correspondence.
  8. Complete admission documentation within one business day and schedule follow-up dates as necessary.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience: A minimum of one year in admissions and collections, with knowledge of managed care, insurance coverage interpretation, and familiarity with business software (Excel) preferred.

Additional Requirements: Flexibility to work occasional overtime as needed.
