Position Title: Engineering Project Manager

Role Summary:

The Engineering Project Manager is tasked with defining departmental goals, fostering a cohesive team environment, and establishing effective processes to ensure the team meets its objectives. This position emphasizes project oversight for the design and construction of various electrical infrastructure, including transmission lines, substations, and distribution facilities, along with other related projects as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize project management systems to track budgets and project progress.
  • Create and maintain timelines for both capital and operational projects.
  • Manage contract negotiations for significant equipment and construction services.
  • Draft comprehensive work plans and specifications for major construction initiatives.
  • Review and authorize expenditures within set limits.
  • Prepare and submit departmental budgets for capital and operational expenses.
  • Define project specifications for infrastructure development, including substations and transmission systems.
  • Ensure efficient project timelines by effectively managing consulting engineers.
  • Provide regular updates on departmental activities, focusing on financial and scheduling metrics.
  • Delegate tasks and oversee the performance of team members, offering guidance and training.
  • Implement performance metrics for departmental functions.
  • Engage in discussions with governmental agencies regarding infrastructure adjustments.
  • Coordinate design efforts for the integration of facilities with other utility providers.
  • Represent the organization in external committees as required.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive Project Management Strategy for departmental operations.
  • Present project proposals and contract requests to the governing board.
  • Maintain a record of system deficiencies for capital projects.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary.

Required Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of electric utility operations and construction practices.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, safety regulations, and construction agreements.
  • Understanding of how cold weather affects electrical infrastructure.
  • Ability to identify electrical system requirements and propose effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated success in managing projects using established project management methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a focus on conflict resolution.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and project management software.

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is essential; a focus on electrical engineering is preferred.
  • Additional qualifications in utility design, construction, and planning are advantageous.
  • Professional Engineer registration in the relevant jurisdiction is preferred or must be obtained within a year.
  • A Master's degree in project management or PMP certification is highly regarded.

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant engineering design or construction experience, including three years in leadership and project management roles.
  • Experience with high voltage systems is preferred.
  • Background in electrical, mechanical, and architectural design is beneficial.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage work teams while coordinating with various stakeholders.
  • Experience in a unionized work environment is preferred.
