Compensation Structure

Salary ranges are based on qualifications and experience:

Entry-Level Civil Engineer: $65,000 - $80,000

Intermediate Civil Engineering Professional: $72,000 - $96,000

Municipal Engineering Assistant: $84,000 - $110,000

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed plans, specifications, and cost assessments for capital construction initiatives.
  • Evaluate project designs and specifications to ensure compliance with engineering standards and regulations.
  • Oversee design and construction projects executed by external consulting or contracting firms.
  • Collaborate with City personnel, governmental entities, utilities, contractors, and the public to coordinate project efforts.
  • Provide professional engineering support to various City departments and staff.
  • Review technical drawings and progress payments to ensure adherence to project specifications.
  • Prepare and present reports, including recommendations regarding public infrastructure needs and project updates.
  • Supervise construction inspections and maintenance operations.
  • Address inquiries and concerns from the public, consultants, contractors, and other agencies.
  • Draft correspondence and reports for City staff and stakeholders.
  • Recommend and prepare updates to City regulations, standards, policies, and codes related to public infrastructure systems.
Additional Responsibilities

Entry-Level Civil Engineer
  • Assist with surveys for design, rights-of-way, and construction staking.
  • Research property ownership and interpret legal descriptions.
Intermediate Civil Engineering Professional
  • Team Management: Conduct performance evaluations and maintain open communication with team members.
  • Technical Analysis: Review technical reports and proposed regulations to assess their impact on City operations.
  • Program Development: Participate in meetings to develop and implement new operational initiatives.
  • Budget Preparation: Draft capital improvement and operational budgets.
  • Public Presentations: Present municipal infrastructure improvement projects to the public.
Municipal Engineering Assistant
  • Engineer of Record: Serve as the engineer of record for City projects.
  • Staff Guidance: Supervise professional engineers and technicians.
  • Agency Coordination: Manage projects in collaboration with state and federal agencies.
  • Infrastructure Inventories: Conduct inventories of municipal infrastructure systems.
  • Asset Management: Utilize software to assess maintenance needs.
Required Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering principles and construction practices.
  • Proficient in engineering software, including AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication with the public and colleagues.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Valid Illinois driver's license.
Additional Requirements

Entry-Level Civil Engineer
  • Experience: Up to 3 years of civil engineering experience.
  • Licensing: Professional Engineering Intern (EI) Certificate or ability to obtain within 12 months.
Intermediate Civil Engineering Professional
  • Experience: 3-5 years of civil engineering experience.
  • Licensing: Professional Engineers (PE) license in Illinois or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Municipal Engineering Assistant
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 years in civil engineering within municipal government.
  • Licensing: Professional Engineers (PE) license in Illinois or ability to obtain within 6 months.
