The Senior Staff Accountant plays a crucial role in the preparation of financial reporting for the hospital/organization, adhering to established procedures. This position is responsible for performing record keeping, filing, and system input per internal control policy. The Senior Staff Accountant assists the controller in administering and directing programs to provide accurate and timely financial information to the organization. This includes completing reporting to various government agencies and outside auditors as required. The Senior Staff Accountant partners and coordinates information with accounts payable and other accounting staff.
Key Responsibilities:- Maintains general accounting systems, applying principles of accounting and statistical analysis to maintain daily and monthly records.
- Organizes and completes the posting of transactions and journal entries, evaluating existing procedures for recording assets, liabilities, and financial transactions.
- Prepares hospital operating reports and financial statements, including current and comparative analysis, ensuring that monthly balance sheets and accounts are reconciled and appropriately supported.
- Reviews guidelines and identifies variances, communicating identified problem areas to appropriate leaders.
- Defines goals and plans for provision of services for the department in conjunction with the CFO, coordinating with members of the finance team to ensure accuracy and efficiency is maintained.
- Runs trial balance of general ledger to ensure debits and credits are balanced, verifying entries with source data to resolve any balance discrepancies.
- Audits cash receipts for accuracy and procedural requirements and compliance, investigating and resolving any discrepancies daily.
- 3 years of accounting experience in healthcare or 5 years of accounting experience.
- Acute Care Hospital Finance experience.
- Knowledge of GAAP, HCFA, and other financial regulations, including Medicare, MediCal, and Managed Care.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to define a complex problem, collect data, establish data, and draw a valid conclusion.
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
- Customer service skills appropriate to the job.
- Effective communication skills in a clear and concise manner.
