Position Overview

The Lead Indirect Tax Specialist is accountable for ensuring adherence to state and local sales and use tax regulations, as well as other indirect tax obligations. This role involves implementing measures to mitigate tax liabilities and addressing challenges that arise from operational activities across different tax jurisdictions. Responsibilities include preparing, calculating, and projecting tax-related tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees various functions, including the preparation and review of multi-state sales and use tax filings, evaluation of business licenses, and management of audits related to sales/use tax and business licenses.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable state and local tax laws and indirect tax regulations.
  • Supports the Sales Tax Manager by providing guidance, training, and leadership to team members.
  • Implements strategies to minimize tax exposure for the organization.
  • Reviews and responds to government inquiries and notices.
  • Identifies and proposes solutions for complex and time-sensitive business challenges.
  • Manages the issuance and administration of exemption certificates.
  • Conducts research on intricate tax matters, laws, and pending legislation to assess their impact on operations, including regulations and case law. Assists with special projects as necessary.
Nature of the Role
  • Recognizes core issues and employs problem-solving skills to creatively address complex situations. Effectively troubleshoots and resolves intricate problems, making informed decisions even in uncertain conditions.
  • Independently executes assignments with minimal guidance, determining the approach to solutions. Receives technical support only for unusual or complex issues.
  • May supervise project completion, including planning, assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and evaluating outcomes. Contributes to the professional growth of team members without direct hiring or firing authority.
Work Environment
  • Positioned in a comfortable indoor setting, with infrequent and non-objectionable unpleasant conditions.
  • Primarily involves sitting comfortably, with frequent opportunities for movement. Occasionally requires the ability to lift light items.
  • Typically involves minimal overnight travel, less than 10% of the time.
Qualifications
  • Generally requires a BS/BA in a relevant field, with 5-8 years of experience in a related area, or an MS/MA with 3-5 years of experience. Certification may be necessary in certain areas.
Preferred Skills
  • Proficient in Excel, with the ability to analyze extensive data sets.
  • Experience with Vertex is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Oracle ERP systems is beneficial.
