The University of Georgia Office of Service-Learning (OSL) is seeking dedicated individuals who are passionate about tackling food insecurity within the community as an AmeriCorps Community Food Fellow.

Role Overview: Community Food Fellows will engage in initiatives aimed at addressing food-related challenges in partnership with various organizations both on and off campus. They will play a vital role in supporting efforts focused on food security, sustainable food production, and reducing food waste.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Training: Gain insights into local and national food insecurity issues, food waste management, and sustainable agricultural practices. Develop practical skills in food production, preparation, and safety while completing essential training requirements.
  • Community Engagement: Participate in both direct and indirect service activities that support local and campus initiatives. Assist in organizing outreach events and volunteer management to meet program objectives.
  • AmeriCorps Program Support: Maintain accurate records and reporting, facilitate communication, and contribute to program evaluation efforts.

Community Food Fellows commit to serving for a year, either as half-time or quarter-time AmeriCorps Service Members, working alongside a cohort of up to 22 Fellows.

Service Commitment: Members are expected to complete a total of 900 hours (half-time, averaging 20 hours/week) or 450 hours (quarter-time, averaging 10 hours/week).

Qualifications: A genuine interest in food-related issues and prior experience in volunteerism or leading service initiatives is preferred. Applications are encouraged from both UGA students and external candidates.

Compensation: Members receive a modest living allowance (approximately $10,000 for half-time service or $5,000 for quarter-time service) along with an education award or stipend upon completion of service.

Background Checks: All applicants must undergo criminal history background checks.

Member Duties: Complete 900 or 450 hours of service with various partner organizations (e.g., Campus Kitchen, UGArden, NEGA Food Bank) to support food security, sustainable production, and anti-hunger initiatives. Responsibilities include training, community engagement, and program support.

Program Benefits: Education Award or End of Service Stipend, Training, Living Allowance.

Terms: Permits working at another job during off hours, car recommended, and allows attendance at school during off hours.
