Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Deaf/Blind Support Specialist to join our team at Wake County Public Schools. The successful candidate will provide one-on-one support to a student who is deafblind, working under the direction of the classroom teacher to ensure the student's access to instruction and environmental information.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to a student with deaf/blindness for all or part of a school day.
  • Work under the direction of a student's classroom teacher or other individual responsible for ensuring implementation of a student's Individual Education Program (IEP).
  • Serve as a student's educational team member, supporting the teacher in implementation of the student's IEP, including accommodations, modifications, and implementation of instructional techniques.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to deaf/blindness.
  • Assist and create instructional materials as necessary for the student and accompany the student during the school day to educational environments outside of the classroom and/or school building.
  • Assist the teacher in data collection of the student's performance on their IEP goals, Behavior Intervention Plans, and other progress monitoring required to determine student progress.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the student's individual communication methods and strategies.
  • Work in close proximity of the student while frequently using touch to communicate and instruct students who are primarily tactile learners.
  • Assist the student with deaf/blindness to actively participate in activities and provide a supportive and effective environment in which the student can learn.
  • Participate in training and professional learning established by the district in response to a student's unique needs as a result of their deaf/blindness.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a PreK-12 Special Education Instructional Assistant or related field.
  • Experience with individuals with sensory impairment (deaf/hard of hearing, visual impairment and/or deaf blindness and/or other developmental delays).
  • Complete or willingness to complete training for Deaf/Blind Interveners within 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of deaf/blindness and its impact on language and social skill development.
