Position Overview:

The selected candidate will engage in the assessment of natural resources to determine their status, vitality, and the impact of pests and diseases, as well as the occurrence of nonnative and invasive species. This role involves collaboration with a Forester to analyze data and develop strategies aimed at enhancing watershed quality, promoting forest vitality, and mitigating wildfire risks. The incumbent will also be responsible for documenting progress and compliance of state contractors and forestry teams, marking trees, identifying property lines, and assisting in the layout of treatment units for various projects. The position requires travel across the state for extended periods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee natural resource initiatives, documenting the effectiveness of management practices and generating reports on outcomes and recommendations for future actions.
  • Conduct surveys and assessments of natural resources to guide treatment strategies focused on watershed enhancement, forest health, and wildfire risk reduction.
  • Provide expert guidance to staff and stakeholders regarding forestry practices, forest health issues, pest and disease management, and hazardous fuel management.
  • Assist Foresters in preparatory tasks such as designating harvest areas, identifying property boundaries, and planning treatment unit layouts.
  • Travel for state-related business as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Natural resource management principles in forestry, rangeland management, restoration ecology, fire ecology, or related fields.
  • Basic analytical techniques for data collection and interpretation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS, and other relevant software.
  • Environmental regulations and cultural laws.

Skills in:

  • Effective communication, both verbal and written.
  • Active listening to facilitate clear communication.
  • Identification of plants, insects, and forest pathogens.
  • Data collection and analysis for ecological monitoring.
  • Utilization of forestry measurement tools and software.

Ability to:

  • Manage operations and apply forestry and natural resource management principles effectively.
  • Communicate clearly with staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Navigate rugged terrain to perform layout and other preparatory activities efficiently.
  • Engage in critical and creative thinking.
  • Travel extensively throughout the state.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field, or a minimum of two years of relevant field experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A valid driver's license is required. All employees operating a vehicle for state business must maintain a current, valid driver's license and complete necessary training and record checks.
