Position Overview: The Lead Surgical Technologist role at Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group demands advanced expertise and skills essential for executing delegated responsibilities related to the secure and effective functioning of the operating room and associated procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In addition to fulfilling the responsibilities of a Surgical Technologist, this position offers mentorship and support to fellow Surgical Technologists, leveraging knowledge and skills to assist in training and orientation.
  • Accountable for designated non-nursing tasks while embodying relationship-centered care aligned with the values of Houston Methodist.
  • Fosters a constructive work atmosphere that actively aids the interprofessional healthcare team in achieving optimal departmental outcomes.
  • Encourages critical thinking among peers by articulating the rationale behind decisions and providing structured feedback with illustrative examples.
  • Facilitates collaboration by anticipating the need for support and responding positively to requests for assistance.
  • Prepares the operating room, ensuring all equipment and supplies are ready for the next patient, while anticipating additional instruments and materials required during procedures.

Quality and Safety Functions:

  • Assists in the implementation and education of department-specific safety initiatives and standards of practice.
  • Effectively manages multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Engages in debriefing and quality enhancement practices to ensure superior patient care, initiating corrective actions and improvement efforts to meet departmental and hospital quality and safety goals.
  • Maintains efficient utilization of surgical supplies, minimizing unnecessary openings until confirmation of use during surgery.
  • Demonstrates self-motivation in managing time efficiently, prioritizing daily tasks, and assisting team members during peak workloads.
  • Identifies opportunities for innovation and improvement within departmental projects and shared governance activities.
  • May co-chair a unit-based Shared Governance Council.

Resource and Committee Participation:

  • Acts as a resource in surgical technology for the department on various hospital committees.
  • Participates in at least one departmental or hospital committee or subcommittee, facilitating the achievement of the committee's objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent military training.
  • Certification as a Technologist in Surgery-Certified (NCCT) is required.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly those affecting patient or employee safety.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues, maintaining a customer service focus.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and proficient use of hospital databases such as EPIC.
  • Competency in decontamination processes and operation of autoclave equipment.

Travel Requirements: Travel specifications may vary by department, but typically do not require travel outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
