Position Overview: The Lead Surgical Technologist role at Houston Methodist involves advanced expertise and capabilities essential for executing delegated responsibilities related to effective and secure operating room support and associated procedures. This position operates autonomously, applying sound judgment, and communicates observations and patient concerns to the licensed nurse or surgeon.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Collaboration: Fosters a constructive work atmosphere that actively supports the interprofessional healthcare team in achieving optimal departmental outcomes. Encourages open, professional communication, including active listening and educational opportunities to ensure mutual understanding.
  • Mentorship: Guides and educates peers in critical thinking by articulating the rationale behind decisions and providing structured feedback with relevant examples. Serves as a preceptor for new surgical technologists, leveraging expertise to train and orient new staff.
  • Operational Preparedness: Prepares the operating room, ensuring all equipment and supplies are ready for upcoming procedures. Anticipates additional instruments and supplies required during surgeries and maintains accurate updates for surgeon preference cards.
  • Surgical Assistance: Proactively assists the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies during various surgical procedures, demonstrating competence in the role of surgical technologist.
  • Quality Assurance: Upholds the highest standards of sterile technique throughout all procedures. Prepares sterile dressings and assists with terminal cleaning of the operating room.
  • Resource Management: Ensures efficient use of surgical supplies, minimizing waste and making recommendations for cost-effective practices.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identifies opportunities for innovation and efficiency within departmental projects and participates in committees aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA).
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist or equivalent.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficient in medical terminology and effective communication with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures.
