Position Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Lead Surgical Technologist role demands a comprehensive understanding and expertise necessary to execute assigned responsibilities linked to the secure and effective support functions within the operating room and associated procedures. This role operates autonomously, demonstrating sound judgement, and communicates observations and patient concerns to the licensed nurse or surgeon. Beyond fulfilling the duties of a Surgical Technologist, the Lead Surgical Technologist also offers mentorship and direction for Surgical Technologist roles, leveraging expertise to train and orient new team members. This position is accountable for designated non-nursing responsibilities and practices relationship-centered care aligned with Houston Methodist values. Additional responsibilities for the Lead Surgical Technologist will encompass general patient care and departmental maintenance as assigned by licensed personnel.

Key Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Foster a positive work environment that aids the interprofessional healthcare team in achieving optimal departmental outcomes. Encourage open, professional communication (verbal, nonverbal, written) that includes active listening and teaching to ensure mutual understanding, serving as a role model.
  • Guide others in critical thinking by articulating the rationale behind decisions and providing structured feedback with examples. Act as the department preceptor for new surgical technologists, utilizing expertise to train and orient others.
  • Encourage teamwork by anticipating the need for assistance and responding positively to requests for help. Promote peer accountability to enhance department scores for employee engagement.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepare the operating room, equipment, and supplies for upcoming patients. Anticipate additional instruments, equipment, and supplies needed during procedures before the surgeon scrubs in. Maintain and accurately update surgeon preference cards within the relevant service line.
  • Anticipate the requirements of the surgeon and nursing staff by passing instruments and supplies during surgical procedures, competently fulfilling the role of surgical technologist across various surgical specialties including but not limited to: orthopedics, gynecology, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, urology, cardiovascular, spine, neurology, oral/maxillofacial, and minimally invasive techniques.
  • Assist the circulating RN with surgical counts of sponges, instruments, needles, and other items.
  • Exemplify behaviors and skills, through peer accountability, to enhance department scores for patient satisfaction.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Uphold the highest standards of sterile technique during pre and post-procedures. Prepare sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices. Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization following surgical procedures. Assist team members with terminal cleaning of the operating room.
  • Support the implementation and education of department-based safety initiatives and standards of practice. Effectively manage multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Initiate corrective actions and improvement activities aimed at enhancing departmental and hospital quality and safety targets, reporting near misses, and collaborating with the interprofessional healthcare team.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ensure efficient use of surgical supplies and minimize the opening of supplies until confirmation of their necessity during surgery. Propose recommendations for cost containment during procedures.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation to manage time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks. Utilize downtime efficiently to assist team members.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Identify and propose areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement for departmental projects and shared governance activities. May co-chair a unit-based Shared Governance Council.
  • Serve as a resource in surgical technology for the department on various hospital committees. Participate in at least one departmental or hospital committee or subcommittee and facilitate the achievement of the committee's goals.
  • Actively seek opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills towards expertise in competencies with a focus on continuous development. Regularly update the My Development plan.

Qualifications

EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent education (e.g., GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist
License/Certification

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) AND
  • CSA - Certified Surgical Assistant (NCCSA) - Certification by the Surgical Technologist Association OR
  • TS-C - Technologist in Surgery-Certified (NCCT) - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) OR
  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA) - the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR
  • GRNDF - Surgical Technologist Met Grandfather Clause (Bill or meet the Grandfather clause (Bill 643). This bill includes an extensive grandfather clause exempting all individuals employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility before the specified date. The clarification notes that legislation does not state employed "on" that date, but rather "before that date. A surgical technologist who was employed before SB1239, Sec : 30 CEUs shall be completed every two years
