Stanford University is seeking a highly skilled Cryo-FIB Milling Specialist to join our Electron Microscopy Facility team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining our state-of-the-art Aquilos FIB milling machine, preparing samples, and conducting complex experiments to gather data for major research projects.
Key Responsibilities- Independently operate and maintain the Aquilos FIB milling machine and prepare samples.
- Conduct complex experiments to gather data for a portion of a major research project, making recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to the principal investigator.
- Train and oversee users for FIB milling, evaluating the quality of data obtained by users.
- Interface and collaborate with the High Performance Computing team to implement data collection strategies that benefit our user community.
- Maintain accurate logs for Aquilos performance and usage, and develop new research protocols as needed.
- Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools, contributing to the preparation of papers for publication and presenting ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic conferences.
- PhD or M.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Bioengineering, Physics, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of cryo-FIB milling and SEM experience with expertise in handling samples, and experience with cryo-ET, including microscope operation and evaluating data.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a solid understanding of the principles of cryoFIB milling and SEM.
- Familiarity with computational image processing and analysis of cryo-ET images, and a general understanding of cryo-ET, including single-particle analysis.
This position is based primarily at Stanford main campus, but may also work at SLAC. The employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator. May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.
