Position Overview
The Financial Aid Advisor I plays a crucial role in guiding, awarding, and verifying students throughout the financial aid journey.

This position collaborates with Deans from various academic divisions to manage departmental scholarship allocations, focusing on one or two specific schools.


The Financial Aid Advisor I reports directly to the Associate Director for Financial Aid and is an integral member of the Financial Aid Services team within the Enrollment Services sector.

Minimum Qualifications


At least one year of experience in financial aid, including processing, student loan management, or related functions.

Familiarity with the Banner Financial Aid Management system is advantageous.

The incumbent must maintain good standing with all federal student loans and grants.

Preferred Qualifications


A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.

A bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Exhibit an attitude and conduct that align with the values and mission of the department and institution.


Engage with prospective and current students and their families to explain financial aid processes and programs; guide students through the financial aid application and documentation requirements.


Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of financial aid regulations and the evolving federal guidelines related to Title IV programs.

Stay informed about federal and state regulations concerning student loans, verification, and application procedures, as well as other financial aid areas.

Understand and uphold FERPA regulations regarding student confidentiality.


Deliver exceptional customer service to students, parents, faculty, and staff both in person and via phone.

Examine student data as applications are finalized.

Verify all documentation in student applications as specified in the Student Federal Aid Handbook and the Student Aid Report.

Communicate with students through written correspondence when discrepancies arise or additional information is required.

Manage email inquiries sent to the Financial Aid Office's general account.

Review academic transcripts for Satisfactory Academic Progress for incoming transfer students.


Package students within a designated alphabetical range and oversee the Nursing school scholarship distribution as applications are completed in accordance with state, federal, and institutional guidelines.

Responsibilities extend to students at all academic levels, including undergraduate, graduate, law, DNP, and PhD programs.


Acquire and maintain comprehensive knowledge of current tuition, fees, housing, and board structures, and how these relate to a student’s financial aid package.


Assist in resolving disputes or issues raised by students, parents, or other university departments regarding student accounts in a fair and effective manner to benefit both the student and the institution.

Present financial aid information to transfer students during general presentations.


Participate in recruitment events representing the Financial Aid Office.

Handle emergency loan processing at the start of each term.

Post scholarship awards to student accounts in accordance with university policies, ensuring eligibility criteria are met for each award.

Collaborate closely with Enrollment Services, Student Accounts, and Registrars to address student concerns.

Assist in updating office brochures, forms, and procedures as necessary.

Other duties as assigned.

NOTE:

During training, the Financial Aid Advisor will be evaluated to identify strengths in financial aid areas, and as these are recognized, additional responsibilities will be assigned to create a comprehensive job role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of student financial aid and/or student account management.


Understanding of Veteran Affairs Benefits and Services for military members and their dependents is essential (may be acquired through on-the-job training if necessary).

Ability to handle confidential information discreetly.

Capacity to manage competing tasks effectively.

Maintain a customer service orientation in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Strong organizational capabilities.


Ability to communicate and collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds; adept at counseling students and their families.

Clear and effective communication skills in English.

Excellent problem-solving skills.

Familiarity with accounting and bookkeeping principles; ability to understand financial functions; basic computational skills.

Proficient computer skills, including MS Office.

Ability to work independently with a high degree of accountability and precision.

The salary range for this position is $35,000 - $38,500.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Regularly operates a computer and other office equipment.

Constantly visually identifies, observes, and assesses.

Frequently communicates with university constituents.

Often remains stationary (standing and/or sitting). Occasionally moves to accomplish tasks and/or to transition between work locations.

Occasionally moves common office materials.

Work is primarily indoors but requires the incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.

Candidate will be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones and office machines.

Standard office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. During peak processing some overtime may be required.
