Position Overview
This role is part of a unionized workforce.

Participants in our programs are adults aged 18 and older who require immediate assistance in a safe environment. Our center is committed to treating all participants with dignity and respect, staffed by EMTs, health workers, and safety monitors. We operate a 24-hour, welcoming, trauma-informed space focused on harm reduction principles.

Our mission emphasizes support for individuals at heightened risk of substance use-related behaviors, trauma, homelessness, and overdose. Our priorities include:
  • Reducing barriers for individuals who use drugs to access a non-judgmental, participant-centered program.
  • Providing welcoming and compassionate support to marginalized populations.
  • Addressing the impacts of substance-related harms in the community.
  • Creating a stigma-free environment that incorporates the needs of drug users into our mission.
  • Monitoring the program's effectiveness to enhance service delivery.
  • Collaborating with community partners to create sustainable resource links for individuals.
Role of the Community Engagement Specialist
The Community Engagement Specialist in Harm Reduction Services acts as a liaison to the community while conducting outreach in the vicinity of our center. This role involves disseminating information about our program and providing direct referrals to potential participants. As part of a collaborative team, the Specialist will help ensure that community members feel safe and informed about our mission and services.

The Specialist will be responsible for:
  • Delivering outreach services to the community, connecting with both residents and unhoused individuals.
  • Providing accurate and accessible information about our programs.
  • Engaging compassionately with marginalized populations, redirecting them to necessary services.
  • Upholding respect and dignity in all interactions, employing harm reduction and trauma-informed care principles.
  • Responding to community needs and crises with appropriate interventions.
Training and Development
Continuous training will be provided on topics such as harm reduction, effective outreach, overdose prevention, and crisis response.

Qualifications
Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, particularly those facing substance use and mental health challenges.
Desired:
  • Lived experience with homelessness or substance use is valued.
Knowledge and Skills
Required:
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care and harm reduction services.
  • Ability to engage sensitively with diverse populations.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
