Position Overview

The Community Support Specialist plays a vital role in enhancing the safety and accessibility of emergency shelter services, drop-in assistance, and management for individuals experiencing intoxication and withdrawal. This position is dedicated to addressing the immediate needs of individuals facing homelessness who lack access to alternative shelter options, as well as supporting those in withdrawal management. As a primary point of contact for guests and clients, the specialist fosters a secure and respectful atmosphere while conducting intake assessments, assisting with housing solutions, and facilitating referrals to various agencies and services.

Key Responsibilities:

Core Duties:
  1. Engages with individuals in a courteous and professional manner, maintaining effective working relationships while executing job responsibilities.
    1. Regularly interacts with colleagues, the public, vendors, and interdepartmental teams to exchange detailed information.
    2. Occasionally engages in negotiations to achieve work-related objectives.
  2. Responds to Public Health Emergencies.
    1. Possesses knowledge of emergency preparedness protocols and fulfills roles as outlined in the Emergency Operations Plan.
    2. Remains accessible during emergencies with a contingency plan in place.
  3. Adheres to safety guidelines and maintains an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
    1. Follows established rules and safety protocols to achieve job objectives and prevent injuries.
    2. Addresses unsafe conditions promptly and appropriately.
    3. Utilizes protective equipment as required and employs proper ergonomics during tasks.
  4. Ensures a safe and supervised environment for shelter and withdrawal management operations.
    1. Oversees the check-in process for guests and clients, including assessments for safety and compliance.
    2. Completes intake procedures and ensures all necessary information is collected.
    3. Provides essential resources such as food, fluids, and toiletries to guests and clients.
    4. Facilitates access to emergency services as needed.
    5. Maintains accurate records and communicates effectively with team members.
    6. Utilizes communication logs to summarize shift events and reviews logs prior to commencing duties.
    7. Enforces shelter policies and fosters relationships with guests, addressing their needs with empathy.
    8. Employs harm reduction strategies when interacting with guests and effectively manages crises.
    9. Supports volunteers and provides necessary supervision and assistance.
    10. Engages in continuous learning regarding homelessness, substance use, and available support systems.
    11. Promotes community-based services and collaborates with partner agencies.
  5. Assists in maintaining compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
    1. Stays informed about standards related to shelter operations.
    2. Contributes to the upkeep of facilities.
  6. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Special Assignments:

Streets to Housed Program:
In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Community Support Specialist will provide essential support and service connections to individuals experiencing homelessness or those transitioning into housing. Responsibilities include outreach, education on safety measures, and facilitating access to testing and transportation.

Neighborhood Responds:
This role involves engaging with individuals in the downtown area, providing support services to those experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges. The specialist will work closely with the public and local businesses to foster positive interactions and effective crisis responses.

Qualifications:

A High School diploma or GED is required, along with two years of experience in human services, particularly with low-income and homeless populations. A valid driver's license is necessary for those assigned to drive a city vehicle.

Physical Demands:

This position involves medium work, primarily within a shelter and detox center environment. Responsibilities may include moving throughout the facility and attending local meetings. The role requires active participation in crisis prevention and intervention activities, with exposure to individuals facing significant challenges. Flexibility in scheduling is essential, as shifts may include days, evenings, and weekends.
