Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Phlebotomist II to join our team at Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group. As a Phlebotomist II, you will be responsible for performing phlebotomy and other specialized specimen collection procedures for patients in in-patient and out-patient settings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process, organize, label, and transport specimens for laboratory testing
  • Input and extract data with the Laboratory Information System
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor for staff, providing guidance and mentorship
  • Perform clerical tasks, including answering phones and faxing lab reports as needed
  • Promote a positive work environment and contribute to a dynamic, team-focused work unit
  • Collaborate with patient care team members to communicate and report pertinent patient care information
  • Serve as a preceptor to less experienced staff and students, utilizing skills and knowledge to train and educate others
  • Perform special collections/procedures as directed and according to competency and policies/procedures
  • File requisitions, reports, and other pathology materials appropriately
  • Serve as escalation support for less experienced staff
  • Perform daily check-off duties and restock supplies in the work area as assigned
  • Maintain a safe environment within the Laboratory, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials, security, and emergency preparedness
  • Use department resources/equipment/supplies properly and efficiently
  • Guide and mentor section employees and students to build confidence in skills, knowledge, and abilities
  • Participate in departmental projects and activities, and seek continuing education opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies
Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience, including data entry and specimen handling
  • Neonatal/pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred
  • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification by Board of Certification (ACA), (AMT), (NCCT) AND PBT(ASCP) - Phlebotomy Technician (ASCP)
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of the healthcare team
  • Exhibits excellent customer service skills, delivering high-quality care to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers
  • Possesses basic computer knowledge, operating multiple computer systems, including Hospital/Laboratory Information Systems and Office software
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of specimen requirements for testing, including serum, plasma, or whole blood, tissue, and body fluids
  • Demonstrates knowledge of different specimen collection containers and media
  • Strong training, leadership, and mentoring skills
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job
Travel Requirements

May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area and/or outside of the Houston Metropolitan area.
