Pediatric Intensive Care Registered Nurse

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Pediatric Intensive Care Registered Nurse to join our team at Texas Children's Hospital. This role requires an individual who thrives in a high-pressure environment and demonstrates adaptability in critical care situations.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is structured into four specialized cohorts to enhance patient care and outcomes.


Unit Cohorts:

  • Cohort 9: Focused on surgical and neuro-surgical patients, including those recovering from liver and kidney transplants, trauma, and seizure disorders.
  • Cohort 10: Concentrates on medical cases, particularly pulmonary issues and hematology/oncology patients.
  • Cohort 11: A diverse mix of medical-surgical patients requiring intensive care.
  • Cohort 12: Transitional Intensive Care Unit, dedicated to chronic, technology-dependent patients needing extensive education before discharge.

As a member of the PICU nursing team, you will engage with patients across all cohorts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients and their families, considering biophysical, psychosocial, developmental, cultural, spiritual, and environmental factors.
  • Evaluate patient conditions, anticipate potential complications, and recognize changes in health status.
  • Adjust care plans based on new insights and communicate updates effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary discussions and document findings appropriately.
  • Support families in understanding and executing their roles in the care plan.
  • Assess learning needs and readiness of patients and families prior to educational interventions.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills in interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.

Qualifications

All candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any recommended booster doses, unless exempt for medical or religious reasons.


  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or an associate's degree with a signed agreement for a nursing bridge program.
  • Current licensure with the Texas Board of Nursing or Nurse Licensure Compact, along with BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • A minimum of one year of professional nursing experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Strong time management and resource allocation skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in operating unit-specific medical equipment.
  • Able to work night shifts as required.
  • Knowledge of nursing processes, critical thinking, PALS, ACLS, and collaborative care practices.
