About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Specialist to join our Mobile Response Team (MRT) at Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC). As a Peer Specialist, you will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to provide crisis intervention services, assessment, referral, and linkage to needed services for individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health/substance use disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide timely outreach services to individuals in crisis, including assessment, referral, and linkage to needed services.
  • Conduct multi-axial assessments, chemical dependency assessments, crisis intervention, stabilization, and meaningful engagement for adults.
  • Establish and implement plans to successfully engage clients in relevant services and other resources.
  • Facilitate recovery groups at housing sites and provide peer recovery support.
  • Complete all data collection and documentation required of the MRT Project and DESC in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with traditional and non-traditional programs/services providing services for the population served.
Requirements
  • Lived experience as a consumer of behavioral health services (mental health and/or substance use treatment) or be the parent or legal guardian of a child who has received behavioral health services.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Peer Specialist certification from the Washington State Peer Counselor Training Program within 60 days of employment.
  • Ability to meet Washington Department of Health requirements for registration as an Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC) or any other superseding credential.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant community resources and methods for accessing them.
  • Experience working with adults who are experiencing or who have experienced homelessness, have a mental health and/or co-occurring substance use disorders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Has current Certified Peer Specialist certification from the Washington State Peer Counselor Training Program.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation skills, crisis intervention & stabilization, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Experience in outreach or crisis work.
  • Bi-cultural background/experience.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish/English.
