Job Title: Peer Specialist - Crisis Support

At Downtown Emergency Service Center, we are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Specialist to join our team. As a Peer Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing crisis support and case management services to adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses and/or substance disorders.

Job Summary:

The Peer Specialist will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to provide outreach, engagement, and support to clients in crisis. You will assess and coordinate daily driving needs for clients, transport them to appointments, and assist case managers in coordinating consumer supports and linkages in the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide crisis support and case management services to adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses and/or substance disorders.
  • Assess and coordinate daily driving needs for clients, including transportation to appointments and community resources.
  • Assist case managers in coordinating consumer supports and linkages in the community.
  • Integrate personal experience with mental illness into work with program participants.
  • Utilize a recovery-based approach to assist consumers in reaching their fullest potential.
  • Advocate for clients' access to community resources and services, ensuring their needs are met and rights maintained.
  • Participate in crisis intervention and safety management tasks.
  • Assist consumers with voicing their interests and goals through various channels, including goal plans and crisis plans.
  • Assess consumers' ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) and work with other clinical staff to plan for gaps in their skill base.

Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain Certified Peer Specialist certification from the Washington State Peer Counselor Training Program within 60 days of employment.
  • Ability to meet Washington Department of Health requirements for registration as an Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC) or any other superseding credential.
  • Lived experience as a consumer of behavioral health services (mental health and/or substance use treatment) or be the parent or legal guardian of a child who has received behavioral health services.
  • Interest in working with clients who are difficult to engage and maintain in traditional mental health/substance use disorder programs.
  • Ability to drive an agency or personal vehicle to conduct agency-related business, with a current Washington State driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Strong personal understanding of recovery and resilience, client partnerships, and client choice, with the ability to balance protection from harm and personal dignity.
  • Cultural humility to learn and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Black, Latinx, Native American, Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, LGBTQIA, and other groups who face discrimination and barriers in accessing healthcare.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Certified Peer Specialist certification from the Washington State Peer Counselor Training Program.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation skills, crisis intervention, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Experience in outreach or crisis work.
  • Bi-cultural background/experience.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish/English.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this job include sitting for long periods, walking, moving quickly during de-escalations, communicating with others, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
