Job Summary

The Chief of Staff serves as a senior advisor to the Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, providing strategic guidance and support to the executive leadership team. This role requires a highly skilled and experienced professional who can effectively manage complex projects, communicate with various stakeholders, and contribute to the development of the department's strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic guidance and support to the Chair and executive leadership team
  • Manage complex projects and initiatives, including strategic planning, budget development, and operational improvement
  • Communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, vendors, and senior university administrators
  • Develop and implement effective communication strategies to promote the department's goals and initiatives
  • Collaborate with the Executive Vice Chair, COO, and Vice Chairs to ensure alignment with departmental initiatives
  • Oversee the department's Strategic Planning Initiative and coordinate the execution of the strategic plan
  • Assist the Chair in creating key strategic documents, including self-studies, long-term research and development plans, budget documents, and executive reports
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including alumni, donors, and external partners

Requirements

  • Master's degree and 5-7 years of experience in a university and/or healthcare setting
  • Experience as an executive-level strategic planner and communicator
  • Strong command of language and creative writing abilities
  • Long-term strategic thinking skills and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work comfortably and skillfully with senior executives, faculty, and staff at all levels of Penn Medicine
  • Ability to think conceptually and anticipate and respond to varied and demanding needs of a complex academic department
  • Proven ability to oversee multiple, high-demanding projects; establish and meet deadlines; and anticipate and respond effectively and with good judgment to undefined needs and unexpected challenges
