Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Infection Control Practitioner to join our team at Children's National Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting case reviews, performing patient and staff follow-up, evaluating staff practice, and serving as a liaison between clinical nursing staff and the Infection Control office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct targeted surveillance in assigned patient care units/services to identify and report communicable diseases to respective units/departments and public health agencies.
  • Review microbiology reports daily to identify unusual disease patterns and respond promptly, including informing direct supervisors.
  • Conduct rounds to assess adherence to infection control practices in units/services and report any variances to direct supervisors.
  • Identify and triage cases of epidemiologically significant infections in assigned areas and assist in developing strategies to contain significant pathogens.
  • Ensure infection control databases are maintained in a timely fashion.
  • Apply evidence-based practice guidelines in assigned areas/units and implement effective prevention strategies to prevent infection.
  • Identify prevention opportunities and collaborate with staff to plan and implement prevention and control efforts.
  • Responsible for early identification of unusual disease patterns, clusters, and outbreaks, and promptly respond to outbreaks once identified.
  • Develop and distribute education activities, including training hospital staff on safe use of Personal Protective Equipment.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing (BSN) or Master's Degree in epidemiology, microbiology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of four years of experience working in the field of infection prevention and control.
  • Previous nursing experience working in Critical Care or Emergency Medicine in a pediatric and/or academic healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CICTM) is required upon hire.
