Job Overview

Position Summary

The Healthcare Coding Specialist is responsible for the electronic documentation, storage, and reporting of extensive data sets. This role entails coding various service types according to departmental needs and assignments. The position covers multiple areas including inpatient, outpatient, emergency room, and outpatient clinical coding. Coders will utilize a comprehensive understanding of procedure coding, diagnosis coding, medical terminology, and anatomy/physiology.


Key Responsibilities

Collaboration
* Collaborates with healthcare providers to track un-coded medical records and identify areas for improvement in coding assignments.

Works closely with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) specialists and clinical staff to establish and maintain a thorough audit and management system, ensuring accurate charge capture, sufficient documentation, and correct code assignment across all service lines.

Provides mentorship and training to fellow coders within the department.

For the Ambulatory/Professional Team: Delivers coding and documentation education and training to healthcare providers, staff, and leadership.


Data Integrity
* Reviews medical records to ensure accurate code assignment.

Assigns ICD-10 CM/PCS/CPT and HCPCS codes for inpatient, outpatient, emergency room, outpatient clinical, and professional services as necessary.

Applies precise procedure coding, diagnosis coding, medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, and adheres to industry regulations.

Assists in maintaining the integrity of medical records and identifies documentation improvement opportunities.

For the Ambulatory/Professional Team: Develops educational resources based on coding updates, changes, and audit findings as required.


Compliance and Safety
* Responsible for timely reporting of any safety-related incidents through the designated reporting tool; participates in all safety training programs; performs work safely; monitors the work environment for potential safety issues and ensures compliance among colleagues.

Stays informed and complies with state and federal regulations and company policies relevant to the role.

Ensures all necessary certifications and licenses are current and valid prior to expiration.

Completes all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the required timeframe.

Maintains confidentiality regarding all departmental, patient, and coding matters.

Stays updated with medical terminology and human anatomy.

Meets industry standards for productivity and accuracy.


Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or GED - Required

Associate's Degree or Diploma from a recognized program - Preferred


Certifications
CPC/CSS/CCA/RHIT/RHIA/CPMA - Required


Experience
Minimum of 2 years - Required

Proficiency in ICD-10 - Required
