About Us:
In the United States, millions are just one paycheck away from homelessness. In Washtenaw County, a significant number of individuals are currently facing homelessness.

The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC) has been a key provider of services and emergency shelter since its inception in 1982.

Located centrally, SAWC serves a diverse clientele, including first-time homeless individuals, veterans, survivors of domestic violence, and those dealing with substance abuse or mental health challenges.
Core Services:
Our essential programs include Residential Emergency Shelter, Non-Residential Services, Shelter Diversion, Critical-Time Intervention, and Warming Shelter, assisting nearly 1500 individuals each year.

Mission:
To eradicate homelessness, one individual at a time.

Position Overview:


This role is an integral part of the Shelter Operations Team, responsible for ensuring the effective functioning of shelter floors during assigned shifts.

Key responsibilities encompass maintaining the safety of all guests, delivering exceptional customer service, and executing tasks in alignment with the overarching mission of the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County.

The Shelter operates continuously, providing services around the clock.

The compensation for this position ranges from $18.50/hr to $19.50/hr, depending on tenure in the role.

The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

medical, dental, and vision insurance with minimal deductibles; 403(b) retirement matching; flexible spending accounts; generous paid time off; disability and life insurance; and a flexible work schedule.

We cultivate a dynamic work environment aimed at inspiring hope in those we assist.

Generous paid time off includes 12 days after six months of employment and 24 days annually after one year of service.

The scheduled workdays for this position are Monday through Friday, from 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Committed to the mission of SAWC to end homelessness.
  • Engaging with clients in a non-judgmental and ethical manner (referencing NASW Code of Ethics).
  • Providing supportive, empathetic, and confidential listening while offering general assistance to clients.
  • Familiarizing oneself with and implementing SAWC policies and procedures.
  • Documenting various client interactions and activities in HMIS and staff notes, professionally and appropriately.
  • Availability to work during holidays.
  • Punctuality and accurate timekeeping are essential.
  • Assisting clients in obtaining necessary identification, social security cards, and other essential documents.
  • Coordinating on-site services and activities for guests, including collaborations with other agencies, volunteer groups, and civic organizations.
  • Overseeing the operations of various shelter floors.
  • Performing light cleaning and laundry duties.
  • Undertaking additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
Associate's Degree, professional certification, or equivalent experience is required. Relevant experience is preferred. Familiarity with housing, mental health, substance dependency, and poverty issues is advantageous. Experience in social work, social services, or human services is also beneficial. The SAWC will consider alternative, comparable experience in lieu of a degree.
