Position Overview

This role is situated within the Field Operations Directorate, specifically in the Office of Field Operations.

As an Immigration Services Officer, your primary responsibility will be to evaluate intricate applications and petitions for immigration benefits. You will also assist other federal entities in recognizing individuals who may present a threat to national security and public safety.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL)

    Federal employees who qualify as "surplus" or "displaced" personnel.
  • Internal to an agency

    Current federal employees of this agency.

Key Responsibilities
  • These duties are applicable at the full performance level. At developmental stages, tasks will be of a more limited scope, requiring less independence and complexity.
  • Make determinations to grant or deny complex and sensitive applications and petitions for immigration benefits based on both electronic and paper submissions.
  • Conduct thorough research, interpret relevant statutes, regulations, and precedent decisions to inform adjudicative decisions.
  • Engage with applicants and petitioners to gather statements, assess credibility, and analyze information to establish eligibility for immigration benefits.
  • Perform security checks and collaborate with federal law enforcement to identify individuals ineligible for immigration benefits due to national security, public safety, or other legal reasons.
  • Utilize electronic systems to verify established data points for adjudicative decisions, determine the necessary level of review, and update databases accordingly.
Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National status is required for application.
  • Successful completion of a Background Investigation, including financial disclosure, is mandatory.
  • Passing a drug screening is a prerequisite.
  • Submission of a resume and supporting documentation is required.
  • Males born after a certain date must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Political appointees may need approval from OPM before onboarding.
  • This position is included in the bargaining unit.
Residency Requirement: Candidates must have resided in the United States for three of the last five years or have relevant overseas experience with the U.S. Government.

Probationary Period: A probationary period of one year may be required.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet specific criteria.

Current Federal employees must have served a minimum period at the lower grade or equivalent.

GS-09: Candidates qualify at this level with one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07, or a Master's degree or two years of graduate education in a relevant field.

GS-11: Candidates qualify at this level with one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09, or a doctoral degree or three years of progressively higher-level graduate education.

GS-12: Candidates qualify at this level with one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11, including making final determinations on sensitive immigration cases and conducting legal analyses.
