Position Overview
This role is situated within the Field Operations Directorate, specifically in the Office of Field Operations. As an Immigration Services Officer, your primary responsibility will be to evaluate intricate applications and petitions for immigration benefits, while also collaborating with other federal entities to identify individuals who may pose risks to national security and public safety.

Key Responsibilities
The duties outlined are intended for the full performance level. At developmental stages, tasks will be of a more limited scope, executed with reduced independence and complexity. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Granting or denying complex and sensitive applications and petitions for immigration benefits based on both electronic and paper submissions.
  • Conducting thorough research, interpreting, and applying relevant statutes, regulations, and precedent decisions to arrive at adjudicative conclusions.
  • Interviewing applicants and petitioners to gather statements, assess credibility, and analyze information to determine eligibility for immigration benefits.
  • Performing security checks and assisting federal law enforcement agencies in identifying individuals ineligible for immigration benefits due to national security, public safety, or other legal grounds.
  • Utilizing electronic systems to verify established data points, make adjudicative decisions, determine the appropriate level of review, and update databases accordingly.

Conditions of Employment
To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following conditions:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • Successfully pass a background investigation, including financial disclosure.
  • Pass a drug screening.
  • Submit a resume and supporting documentation.
  • Males born after a specific date must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • This position is part of the bargaining unit and is not deemed essential during facility closures.

Residency Requirement
Applicants not currently employed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services must meet a residency requirement, which states that candidates must have resided in the United States for three of the last five years prior to applying, or have worked for the U.S. Government overseas, or been a dependent of a U.S. Federal or Military employee serving overseas.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet specific experience or educational requirements. Candidates must possess specialized experience or relevant educational qualifications, as outlined for various grade levels (GS-09, GS-11, GS-12).
