Role Summary

The Hunger Advocacy Fellow will engage in a comprehensive year-long experience designed to cultivate leadership skills and deepen faith while actively advocating for the eradication of hunger and the promotion of a just society where everyone has access to food.

This full-time, term-contract position is affiliated with the Lutheran Advocacy - Minnesota and is integral to the Witness in Society team within the Service and Justice sector of the ELCA.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Advocacy Engagement: Facilitate the establishment of a Lutheran advocacy network by empowering community members to advocate against hunger. Collaborate with congregational ministries to provide resources for moral reflection and advocacy efforts, ensuring that the voices of those affected by hunger are amplified in discussions with policymakers.
  2. Communications: Develop and disseminate informative materials such as action alerts, position papers, and social media content to educate stakeholders on hunger advocacy priorities. Foster communication and storytelling initiatives across Lutheran synods and organizations.
  3. Representation: Actively participate in ecumenical coalitions and advocate for public policy aligned with the ELCA's mission. Engage with state lawmakers and public policy leaders to promote hunger-related issues.
  4. Leadership Development: Connect with various teams and other Hunger Advocacy Fellows throughout the year to enhance collective faith formation, leadership skills, and community engagement.
  5. Collaborate with the SPPO director to identify additional responsibilities pertinent to the regional context.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Possess an approachable demeanor and readiness to engage with individuals impacted by hunger and poverty.
  2. Willingness to learn about the ELCA's public engagement and advocacy framework.
  3. Understanding of the theological foundations of the ELCA and commitment to public policy advocacy.
  4. Appreciation for the ELCA's mission and values.
  5. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with various stakeholders.
  7. Proficient research and analytical abilities, along with excellent communication skills.
  8. Awareness of social issues affecting communities and sensitivity to diverse perspectives.
  9. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements

Regular communication and computer use are essential. The role may involve attending meetings and events, requiring mobility within various settings.

Travel Requirements

Minimal travel may be necessary, including potential overnight trips.
