The Accountant I (Specialist) position at the State of California is responsible for performing semi-professional accounting work in the maintenance of incarcerated persons' financial records and associated accounts. This role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Process incarcerated persons' trust withdrawals in TRACS and prepare printed checks for signature.
- Prepare and enter batches for incarcerated worker pay, including collection of pay calculation forms at institution sites and audit calculation forms for accuracy.
- Prepare and audit incarcerated persons' fundraisers in TRACS and prepare checks for signature.
- Post charges to incarcerated persons' accounts for payment of various types, including postage, notary charges, medical copays, copy charges, charges for damages, family visits, and legal supplies.
- Maintain institutional visiting photo project and prepare reconciliation of funds received.
- Prepare CDC 102 for paroling incarcerated persons after receiving notification from Records, place funds from incarcerated persons' account on hold, and enter information for check to be printed in TRACS for Trust Fund balance.
- Prepare Daily Board or List of paroling incarcerated persons, enter parole address and Parole Unit on incarcerated persons' account into TRACS.
- Review and verify incarcerated persons' account information to respond to counselors, correctional officers, incarcerated persons, and other institutions.
- Process informal appeals (CDCR 22), process legal verification of account activity (Informa Pauperis), and process Federal Filing fees.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred.
- Minimum of one year of experience in accounting or related field, preferably in a correctional setting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work effectively with incarcerated persons, counselors, correctional officers, and other institutions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
This position is a 12-month limited term appointment, with possibility of extension up to 24 months or becoming permanent. The working environment is fast-paced and dynamic, with a focus on providing high-quality service to incarcerated persons and other stakeholders.
