Position OverviewRole Summary

Powell Industries, a leading US manufacturer specializing in low- and medium-voltage electrical solutions for various sectors, is on the lookout for driven individuals to fill the role of Senior R&D Engineer II. This position is integral to our expanding New Product Development team within the Research and Development Department. As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with seasoned professionals to create pioneering technologies and product designs, guiding initial ideas through to successful market introduction.

Our offerings encompass top-tier vacuum circuit breakers, advanced monitoring systems, control electronics, communication software, switchgear, motor control solutions, and safety-oriented enclosure systems. With over 75 years of expertise in vacuum switching technology and arc-flash safety, our products are recognized globally and are manufactured across multiple facilities in North America and the UK. One of our Houston-area facilities features a state-of-the-art prototyping shop and a UL-certified high voltage and high current laboratory, providing an opportunity to model and validate your designs in real-time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and propose innovative concepts and intricate designs for both new and existing product lines.
  • Deliver creative solutions that align with profitability, cost efficiency, quality standards, and timely market delivery.
  • Define and specify design parameters, ensuring compliance with standards and preparing necessary documentation.
  • Explore and assess patentable ideas.
  • Supervise the validation and testing of components, systems, or assemblies throughout the development process.
  • Create test plans based on D/PFMEA, project specifications, industry benchmarks, and reliability requirements for both internal and external labs.
  • Direct laboratory testing, analyze results, and formulate corrective action plans.
  • Ensure that project designs adhere to specifications and standards while facilitating error-proof assembly.
  • Document processes, material needs, test outcomes, and project activities as required.
  • Understand and enforce regulatory documentation requirements.
  • Engage with external vendors, consultants, and clients.
  • Collaborate with third-party vendors to create high-quality, cost-effective design solutions.
  • Continuously enhance engineering processes, including DFX, project costs, quality, and lead times.
  • Provide engineering support to Sales/Product Management and Manufacturing for new products and processes.
  • Actively participate in and facilitate the Product Development Process.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or Power Engineering; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in engineering design and/or development on highly technical projects.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively; self-motivated and self-managing.
  • Proficient in electromechanical product design and development.
  • Familiarity with switchgear and/or control systems.
  • Experience with medium/high voltage electrical power systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in CAD and/or analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards (ANSI, IEEE, and IEC).
  • Experience in creating and reviewing DFMEA and PFMEA documentation.
  • Experience in managing projects within a Stage-Gate Process.
  • Active participation in industry organizations to stay informed and influence industry standards is a plus.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, or equivalent software.
  • Strong technical expertise in:
    • Electrical: Current and Voltage Sensors, Power Systems.
    • Mechanical: Molded Components, Mechanism Design, castings, and metal fabrication.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce and edit technical documents, including test reports and engineering standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to strategic and tactical changes.
Work Environment

The role typically involves working in a standard office setting, with some responsibilities in manufacturing facilities and electrical testing laboratories.
