Position OverviewRole Summary

Powell Industries, a prominent manufacturer of electrical equipment for various sectors, is in search of dedicated professionals for the role of Senior R&D Engineer II. This position is crucial to our expansion in New Product Development within our Research and Development Department. As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with skilled experts to create innovative technologies and product designs, guiding initial ideas through to successful market introduction.

Our product range includes top-tier vacuum circuit breakers, monitoring and control electronics, software systems, switchgear, motor control, and safety-oriented enclosure systems. With over 75 years of expertise in vacuum switching technology and arc-flash safety, our solutions are recognized globally and are manufactured across multiple facilities in North America and the UK. One of our Houston-area facilities features a state-of-the-art prototyping shop and a UL-certified high voltage and high current laboratory, providing you with the opportunity to model and validate your designs in real-time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and propose innovative concepts and complex designs for both existing and new product lines.
  • Deliver creative solutions that align with profitability, cost, quality, and time-to-market objectives.
  • Define and specify design parameters, ensuring compliance with standards and preparing necessary documentation.
  • Explore and assess patentable ideas.
  • Oversee the validation and testing of components or systems throughout the development process.
  • Create test plans based on D/PFMEA, project specifications, industry standards, and reliability requirements for both internal and external labs.
  • Manage laboratory testing, analyze data, and formulate corrective action plans.
  • Ensure that project designs adhere to specifications and standards while facilitating error-proof assembly.
  • Document processes, material requirements, test results, and project activities as necessary.
  • Understand and enforce regulatory documentation requirements.
  • Collaborate with external vendors, consultants, and clients.
  • Work with third-party vendors to develop high-quality, cost-effective design solutions.
  • Continuously enhance engineering processes, including DFX, project costs, quality, and lead times.
  • Provide engineering support to Sales/Product Management and Manufacturing on new products and processes.
  • Actively engage in and facilitate the Product Development Process.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or Power Engineering; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in engineering design and development on complex and innovative projects.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively; self-motivated and self-managing.
  • Proficient in electromechanical product design and development.
  • Familiarity with switchgear and/or control systems.
  • Experience with medium/high voltage electrical power systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of CAD and/or analysis tools.
  • Understanding of regulatory standards (ANSI, IEEE, and IEC).
  • Experience in creating and reviewing DFMEA and PFMEA documentation.
  • Experience in managing projects within a Stage-Gate Process.
  • Participation in industry organizations to stay informed and influence industry standards is a plus.
  • Proficient with computers; Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, or equivalent software.
  • Strong technical knowledge in:
    • Electrical: Current and Voltage Sensors, Power Systems.
    • Mechanical: Molded Components, Mechanism Design, castings, and metal fabrication.
  • Proven ability to write and edit technical documents, including test reports and engineering standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to strategic and tactical changes.
Work Environment

This role typically involves duties performed in a standard office setting, with some responsibilities in manufacturing and electrical testing environments.
