Responsibilities


The Department Head is responsible for fostering a patient-centered healthcare environment that employs a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to deliver top-tier care. This role includes 24-hour accountability for departmental operations, ensuring optimal resource utilization for effective performance. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to support departmental functions.
  • Overseeing personnel functions such as recruitment, hiring, performance evaluations, and professional development.
  • Documenting all personnel actions accurately and supporting staff as essential assets to the organization.
  • Demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, mentoring staff, and facilitating their professional growth.
  • Developing and managing an annual budget that aligns with departmental needs and available resources.
  • Collaborating with other department heads to ensure effective resource utilization.
  • Monitoring budgetary expenses and revenues, identifying variances, and adjusting expenditures as necessary.
  • Evaluating and recommending space allocation and design to meet departmental requirements.
  • Creating, implementing, and updating policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Preparing and reviewing bids and managing the distribution and use of supplies and equipment.

This role also involves supporting the mission of USA Health by integrating institutional values into staff operations and creating an environment conducive to the education of medical, nursing, and allied health students. The Department Head serves as a professional role model, utilizing technology to generate reports and correspondence while adhering to compliance requirements and ethical standards.

Additionally, the Department Head will:

  • Encourage staff participation in educational offerings for skill enhancement and ongoing development.
  • Ensure personnel competency through annual evaluations and development plans for those needing improvement.
  • Engage in strategic planning activities for the department and institution, translating the strategic plan to staff and adapting it as necessary.
  • Maintain compliance with standards set by professional, regulatory, and governmental agencies.
  • Foster collaborative relationships among disciplines to ensure quality patient care delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, families, and the healthcare team.

The Department Head will also develop and maintain a performance improvement program utilizing established methodologies, conduct regular patient rounds, and monitor patient progress in collaboration with department supervisors and staff. Regular attendance and the ability to work as scheduled are essential.



Qualifications


A Bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy is required, along with five years of progressively responsible experience as a Respiratory Therapist, including three years in a supervisory or managerial role. Current licensure with the Alabama Board of Respiratory Therapists and registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care is mandatory.
