Responsibilities
The Department Head is responsible for fostering a patient-centered healthcare environment that employs a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to provide cutting-edge care. Key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring 24-hour accountability for departmental operations.
- Utilizing available resources to guarantee effective departmental performance.
- Establishing appropriate staffing levels and skill mixes to support departmental functions.
- Conducting personnel management tasks, including recruitment, hiring, evaluations, and training.
- Documenting all personnel actions accurately.
- Supporting staff as valuable assets to the institution.
- Demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and mentoring team members.
- Developing an annual budget aligned with departmental needs and available resources.
- Coordinating with other department heads for optimal resource utilization.
- Monitoring budgetary expenses and revenues, identifying variances, and adjusting expenditures as necessary.
- Evaluating and recommending space allocation and design to meet departmental needs.
- Creating, implementing, and updating policies and procedures in collaboration with other departments.
- Preparing and reviewing bids and managing the acquisition and distribution of supplies and equipment.
- Translating and incorporating the institutional mission, vision, and values into departmental operations.
- Serving as a professional role model for all staff.
- Utilizing technology to generate reports and correspondence.
- Adhering to compliance requirements and organizational values.
- Facilitating staff participation in educational offerings for skill enhancement and professional development.
- Monitoring staff performance and conducting timely evaluations.
- Participating in strategic planning activities for the department and institution.
- Ensuring compliance with standards established by regulatory and governmental agencies.
- Maintaining practice standards consistent with current research findings.
- Encouraging collaborative relationships among disciplines to ensure quality patient care.
- Communicating effectively with physicians, patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Developing and maintaining a performance improvement program utilizing established methodologies.
- Conducting regular patient rounds and monitoring patient progress.
- Exhibiting regular and prompt attendance and fulfilling work schedule requirements.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience as a Respiratory Therapist, including three years in a supervisory or managerial role. Current licensure with the Alabama Board of Respiratory Therapists and registry with the National Board of Respiratory Care is required.
