About NCOSE and the Research Internship

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) is dedicated to creating a world where individuals can live and love without sexual abuse and exploitation. As a research intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing work of defending human dignity.

The Sexual Justice Advocate Internship program enables you to participate in the defense of human dignity through research and analysis. Interns will gain new skills through hands-on opportunities that seek to prevent exploitation before it begins. You will also have the chance to meet nationally recognized leaders in the field of anti-sexual exploitation and attend education briefings.

The program offers interns an opportunity to investigate their individual strengths and develop new skills. NCOSE is focused on mass-scale prevention of sexual abuse and exploitation, deploying tactics such as corporate advocacy, public policy, civil litigation, and grassroots mobilization to reach this goal.

About the Research Institute

The goal of NCOSE's Research Institute is to create a diverse range of research and knowledge-based outputs to strengthen the foundation across all NCOSE focus areas. This includes a focus on the public health harms of pornography, and the role of academia, electronic service providers, emerging technologies, and demand in fueling sexual abuse and exploitation.

As a research intern, you will utilize your research analysis and writing skills to contribute to this work. Your tasks may include conducting research and literature reviews, drafting research summaries and talking point documents, creating public health campaign strategic plans and materials, and assisting with coordination of special events.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include working on research projects as assigned by the VP & Director of the Research Institute, or the CEO. Such work may include:

Conducting research and literature reviews as directed, using various media and academic resources relating to harms of pornography use, harms of prostitution and other forms of commercial sex, demand for commercial sex and male sex buying behavior, child sexual abuse and online sexual exploitation of children, racism and other social factors as contributors to sexual abuse and exploitation, organizations promoting, distributing, and/or profiting from sexual exploitation, sex trafficking of men, women and children, sex offenders and other topics, emerging technologies and artificial intelligence.

Drafting research summaries and/or talking point documents

Creating public health campaign strategic plans and materials

Assisting with coordination of special events

Development of educational materials and PowerPoint presentations

Development of advocacy materials including letters, advocacy kits, fact sheets, study summaries, NCOSE store resources, booth displays, etc.

Writing and editing for periodic blogs/bulletins/newsletters/letters

Collecting and electronic filing of research studies

Assisting NCOSE at conferences, meetings, events or committees as directed

Assisting as needed with office management including answering of telephones, responding to email or other written requests, drafting correspondence, and filing

Representing NCOSE (as an observer) and reporting on events at webinars, coalition meetings, as well as congressional hearings as directed

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in the review of literature and experience in the use of qualitative data analysis software to code qualitative data. Passionate about opposing sexual exploitation in all its forms, pursuing a degree in public health or a related field, excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task, deadline-oriented, independent worker, proficiency with basic Microsoft Office applications, being open to feedback and willing to make changes to written documents, and can provide their own working laptop and charger.

Compensation

NCOSE internships are unpaid. However, interns may be provided a small monthly stipend based on qualifications and hours in the office.

Schedule

This position requires 24-40 hours per week. Candidates must be mostly available during NCOSE's office hours of Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm EST in order to coordinate with the team. Our team is in the office on M, W, & Th and remote on T & F. Evenings and weekends are typically not eligible for a NCOSE internship.

Location

This internship is at NCOSE's office headquarters in Washington, DC.
