Overview

Under the guidance of the Personnel/Payroll Administrator, the Lead Human Resources Officer will manage the daily functions of the Personnel Office, focusing on the administration of FMLA requests, ensuring employees receive the appropriate FMLA documentation, and maintaining the FMLA tracking spreadsheet. This role includes monitoring work assignments, evaluating FMLA requests, tracking FMLA hours, and overseeing employees on unauthorized leaves, as well as managing the onboarding process for new hires, including both law enforcement and civilian staff. The Lead Human Resources Officer will act as a liaison for the Sheriff's Personnel in interviews and undertake additional responsibilities as required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Essential Duties
    • Administer FMLA documentation.
    • Facilitate the onboarding process for new civilian and law enforcement personnel.
    • Conduct monthly random drug screenings.
    • Work autonomously and make informed decisions.
    • Implement and enforce organizational policies and procedures.
    • Supervise a team of two clerical specialists, assign tasks, and provide training.
    • Coordinate return-to-work drug screenings, COVID tests, MCOLES medical evaluations, police officer medical assessments, hearing tests, lead testing, and interviews.
    • Process various personnel transactions, including personal leaves and new hires.
    • Pre-screen candidates for diverse positions within the department.
    • Organize training for new jailers and police officers.
    • Prepare and analyze various reports.
    • Research and compile documents for the Disability Manager.
    • Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Educational and Experience Criteria
    • An Associate's Degree from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Human Resources, Personnel Management, Public Administration, or a related field; AND
    • A minimum of four (4) years of full-time professional experience in a Personnel Office, including at least one of the following areas: Recruitment, Payroll, Timekeeping, Compensation, Contract Administration, Personnel Transactions, or Classification.
  • Note: An additional two (2) years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of the required degree.
