POSITION SUMMARY

The Law Enforcement Officer operates under the direct oversight of a Sheriff's Command Officer, executing essential law enforcement duties for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. This role is primarily stationed at the Wayne County Jail, focusing on the security and supervision of inmates across multiple jail facilities. The Law Enforcement Officer plays a crucial role in the daily operations of the Sheriff's Office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure the safety and security of the Wayne County Sheriff's Jail and its inmates.
  • Adhere to the established rules, regulations, and procedures of the Wayne County Sheriff's Jail.
  • Guarantee humane treatment of all inmates.
  • Provide testimony during legal or legislative proceedings.
  • Monitor and supervise inmate activities.
  • Enforce compliance with laws, rules, and regulations among inmates.
  • Prepare detailed reports, conduct inmate investigations, transport inmates, and offer emergency assistance as required.
  • Investigate incidents to ascertain causes.
  • Examine illegal or suspicious activities.
  • Respond promptly to emergency alarms and situations.
  • Maintain accurate records of inmate accountability and information.
  • Work a minimum of 40.5 hours weekly, including mandatory overtime as necessary.
  • Conduct daily headcounts to verify the presence of all inmates.
  • Maintain operational documentation.
  • Compile investigation or incident reports.
  • Document crime or accident scenes using video or photographic evidence.
  • Inspect equipment and facilities to ensure compliance with security and safety standards.
  • Record pertinent information regarding suspects or offenders.
  • Safeguard the health and welfare of inmates.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Educational Background
    • Must be a U.S. citizen.
    • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
    • Must hold a valid Michigan Driver's License with a clean driving record.
    • Must successfully complete the MSCTC Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test prior to hiring.
    • Must pass the EMPCO written examination before employment.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

All candidates must undergo a thorough background investigation (Pass/Fail), a Personal Qualifications Interview (60% weight), and evaluations based on experience (25% weight) and higher education (15% weight).

APPLICATION PROCESS

This examination aims to create an eligibility list for filling current and future vacancies, including temporary roles. The list will remain valid for six months but may be extended as necessary. Candidates must pass all assessments to be included on the eligibility list.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Full-time positions offer a competitive salary with annual increases where applicable. Employees receive benefits such as vacation pay, sick leave, health insurance, dental and optical coverage, long-term disability, life insurance, and a retirement plan. Positions may require mandatory and voluntary overtime.

HEALTH SCREENING

All prospective employees must undergo a pre-employment medical examination, including a drug screening, to assess their physical and mental fitness for the role. Failure to meet the required health standards will result in disqualification.

CIVIL SERVICE RIGHTS

Individuals denied the opportunity to participate in the examination may appeal in writing to the Wayne County Civil Service Commission within the specified timeframe. Appeals regarding personal qualifications interviews must also be submitted in writing within the designated period.

PROBATIONARY STATUS

New hires must successfully complete the required training and probationary period as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement before achieving regular employment status.
