Position Overview - Senior Principal Power Systems Engineer

Oracle's Hardware Development division is looking for a seasoned System Power Engineering Technical Lead and Board Power Electrical Design Engineer to contribute to our Server Development initiatives. In this role, you will have the chance to design, architect, and integrate the power delivery systems for cutting-edge Servers utilizing the latest merchant silicon technologies for computing, storage, and communication.

The power demands of our upcoming Oracle servers are substantial, with a heightened emphasis on efficient solutions tailored for cloud environments and integrated rack-level systems. As a Technical Lead in Electrical Design Engineering with a focus on Power, you will oversee the architecture of power subsystems and board-level designs, lead the power engineering team, and ensure detailed design execution. You will be responsible for the power design throughout all stages of product development, culminating in the transition to mass production. Staying updated on advancements in power delivery technology and incorporating these innovations into reliable power solutions for Oracle products will be essential. Additionally, you may provide insights on power systems from previous hardware development projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical leadership to a small team of power engineers.
  • Engaging in power architecture and design discussions at the rack, system, and board levels.
  • Collaborating with power engineers to establish design timelines for prototypes.
  • Creating and updating management presentations regarding project progress.
  • Developing top-tier power designs based on performance metrics, component availability, and cost considerations.
  1. Designing and testing high-power multi-phase Voltage Regulator Down (VRD) solutions that meet or exceed stringent performance standards for next-generation CPUs.
  2. Conducting schematic capture and design analysis.
  3. Overseeing board floor planning.
  4. Guiding CAD designers in placement and routing tasks.
  5. Conducting thorough reviews of CAD outputs.
  6. Leading and participating in formal design evaluations.
  7. Drafting specifications and publishing bills of materials.
  8. Collaborating with VRD Controller and Power Stage vendors to create and validate configuration files.
  • Designing, testing, and optimizing analog and digital DC-DC converters with power ratings from 500mA to 600A, including Electronic Circuit Breakers.
  • Establishing and maintaining automation platforms for validating power designs.
  • Creating and validating comprehensive power solutions for Oracle's next-generation server architectures.
  • Working with various internal teams to ensure power specifications for systems and VRDs are met.
  • Collaborating with internal firmware and software teams to implement system-level diagnostics.
  • Engaging with external vendors to ensure compliance of power components with required specifications and regulations.
  • Testing and bringing up prototypes.
  • Developing and executing test plans.
  • Mentoring junior Power Engineers.
  • Leading lab debugging efforts for hardware issues.

Qualifications:

Required Skills:

  • Proven experience as a technical lead for a small team of power engineers.
  • In-depth knowledge of system-level power distribution and architecture from rack to chip level.
  1. Experience in designing high-power on-board multi-phase VRD systems, DC-DC converters, voltage regulators, and electronic circuit breakers. Familiarity with I2C/PMBUS/SVID communication protocols is preferred.
  2. Expertise in analog and digital PWM control architectures.
  3. Familiarity with power simulation tools such as SPICE, Simplis, and Cadence PowerSI is preferred.
  4. Experience in testing and validating power devices.
  • Strong understanding of high-speed design methodologies for Power Integrity and Signal Integrity.
  • Proficient in the complete workflow of CAD design tools like Cadence, Concept, and Allegro.
  • Skilled in constraint-driven design methodologies.
  • Experience with the power requirements of high-performance CPU processors, GPUs, DDR memory DIMMs, PCIe cards, flash modules, and disk drives.
  • Knowledge of DC-DC control loop tuning for stability and transient performance.
  • Understanding of effective PCB stack-up design.
  • Excellent communication and leadership capabilities.
  • Experience with recent Intel/AMD chipsets is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with digital or analog simulation techniques is a plus.
