Our non-profit legal organization provides vital legal representation to low-income individuals across various civil matters, including family law, housing, consumer rights, public benefits, education, and healthcare.

The Kinship Care Unit focuses on strengthening familial bonds for children residing with non-parent caregivers (relatives or fictive kin). We offer comprehensive support in areas such as adoptions, minor guardianships, custody arrangements, and other critical family law matters. Our service area encompasses the five-county metropolitan region and extends to some statewide cases.

The Kinship Care Unit team comprises a Managing Attorney, four Staff Attorneys, and one Intake Paralegal.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide essential litigation support, backup intake assistance, and case management for minor guardianship, third-party custody, adoption, visitation, public benefits, education, school enrollment, and other relevant cases.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents, including pleadings, court filings, and e-filings for attorneys. Assist attorneys during document execution and preparation, organization of trial binders, notarization (must be or willing to become a notary public), mailing, and client interviews for secondary case information.
  • Manage cases effectively, providing clients with information and guidance under attorney supervision. Prepare closing letters, conflict letters, and maintain accurate data entry in multiple databases.
  • Track cases diligently to ensure proper documentation is gathered and update funding codes. Manage files by scanning documents into the client database, filing, archiving closed cases, and assisting with timely review and documentation of closed case files for review by the Managing Attorney.
  • Perform other paralegal/administrative assistant tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred but not required.
  • Possess strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, excellent computer proficiency (including word processing and accurate data entry), and experience with Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. Demonstrate excellent writing, communication, and listening skills; ability to communicate effectively with clients, their families, and others as needed; work well both independently and collaboratively; adaptability; appreciation for diversity; a demonstrated interest in or experience working with low-income individuals; and readily accessible transportation.
  • Knowledge of family law, education, and poverty law is highly valued.
  • Experience with legal office management software and proficiency in languages other than English, along with a willingness to enhance language skills, are highly desirable.
Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $34,500+, commensurate with experience. Salaries increase annually based on a predetermined salary scale. The program offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 13 paid holidays, 6 weeks of paid time off, 6 weeks of parental leave; health, life, and long-term/short-term disability insurance; and more.
