Position Overview

The Infection Prevention Surveillance Specialist plays a crucial role in merging clinical expertise in Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) with advanced information technology to effectively gather, analyze, and disseminate IPAC data. This position is essential in supporting the IPAC Department by managing electronic medical record systems, ensuring the integrity and quality of surveillance data, and providing ongoing training and workflow assistance to the IPAC team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily surveillance operations, including the collection, analysis, and distribution of IPAC data to designated stakeholders.
  • Exhibit proficiency in critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and a comprehensive understanding of Infection Prevention and Control methodologies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow protocols, troubleshoot issues, and make informed decisions in various scenarios.
  • Engage professionally with colleagues, showcasing effective conflict resolution abilities.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with the health system's Infection Prevention & Control Teams and other departments involved in data management.
  • Understand data quality standards that facilitate the integration of information to identify infection prevention challenges and assist in clinical decision-making.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for National Health System Network (NHSN) surveillance standards and workflows within electronic medical records.
  • Review microbiology results and monitor for potential hospital-acquired infections.
  • Assist in the development and upkeep of the IPAC SharePoint site.
  • Support the IPAC team in creating electronic reporting solutions for conditions mandated by health authorities.
  • Participate in identifying and reporting hospital-acquired infections to NHSN.
  • Perform routine validations on key data elements to maintain data integrity.
  • Apply technical knowledge of current application systems to enhance processes and drive continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of infection control policies in alignment with national guidelines.
  • Provide expert consultation on infection risk assessment and prevention strategies.
  • Engage in departmental and hospital preparedness activities related to infection control.
  • Mentor less experienced infection control staff.
  • Participate in educational offerings and meetings at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Assist in the formulation and execution of the annual HAI surveillance and validation plan.
  • Contribute to goal setting and action planning for surveillance and data management programs.
  • Fulfill the professional, clinical, and technical competencies required for the assigned department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a science or health-related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in infection control.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Health Services Administration from an accredited institution.

Licensure and Certification Requirements

  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC).
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) in accordance with state regulations.
