Position Overview

The Infection Prevention Surveillance Specialist plays a critical role in merging clinical expertise in Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) with advanced information technology. This position is responsible for the systematic collection, aggregation, analysis, and dissemination of IPAC data that is essential for both internal and external reporting. The specialist will provide vital support to the IPAC Department through electronic medical record systems, ensuring the integrity and quality of all surveillance activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily surveillance tasks, including the collection and analysis of IPAC data for key stakeholders.
  • Exhibit proficiency in critical thinking, technical skills, and a comprehensive understanding of Infection Prevention and Control principles.
  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving abilities and sound judgment in various scenarios.
  • Maintain professional interactions and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Collaborate with the health system's Infection Prevention & Control Teams and other departments to enhance the IPAC data management program.
  • Understand data quality standards to facilitate the integration of data for identifying infection prevention issues.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for National Health System Network (NHSN) surveillance and reporting protocols.
  • Review microbiology results and monitor for potential hospital-associated infections.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the IPAC SharePoint site.
  • Support the team in creating electronic reporting solutions for notifiable conditions as mandated by authorities.
  • Participate in identifying and reporting hospital-associated infections to NHSN.
  • Perform routine validations on key data elements to uphold data integrity.
  • Apply knowledge of current application systems to assist in process improvements.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of infection control policies based on national guidelines.
  • Provide expert consultation on infection risk assessment and prevention strategies.
  • Engage in departmental and hospital Infection Control Joint Commission preparedness activities.
  • Mentor less experienced infection control staff.
  • Participate in educational offerings and meetings related to infection control.
  • Assist in formulating the annual HAI surveillance and validation plan.
  • Engage in goal setting and action planning for surveillance and data management programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a science or health-related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in infection control.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Health Services Administration from an accredited institution.

Licensure and Certification Requirements

  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC).
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) in accordance with state regulations.
